An immersive streaming platform for soccer games.

Challenge

To solve the deadlock between the limited stadium capacity against a huge number of Flamengo's fans.

My role

To discovery, create and validate business, wich involved product discovery and MVP design.

Hacking Rio

This project was developed during Hacking Rio 2019.
Hacking Rio is the biggest Hackathon of Latin America.
More than 500 hackers were there, creating solutions for education, gas, insurance, cybersecurity, energy etc. I was in the sport cluster and the main sponsor was Flamengo, a well- know soccer team from Brazil. My team was 4 developers of UFF University and me.

EARLY RESEARCH

Flamengo has more than 42 million of fans, but the local stadium, Maracanã, has the capacity of 90 thousand.
Without tickets for all the fans, the only way to watch the game is on TV. So, we asked fans about the feeling of being at the stadium in order to develop a better experience of watching a soccer game at home.
“The emotion of being in the stadium, in the crowd is unique”.
76% of fans answered that the emotion is the core difference between being at the stadium versus watching on TV.

Besides few emotion, we've asked fans what are the issues of watching the game on TV.
The game broadcast often starts 10 minutes before the game. Why not having a pre-show?
Some narrators are boring.
I think some narrators are not cheering for my team.
When a player is hurt I never remember who are the substitutes and get nervous until the narrator says it.
Sometimes the replay or close filming are disturbing. I hate to miss the game.
You can't interact with anyone, so I go to social networks after the games.

How to bring the emotion of watching the game at the stadium to Flamengo fans homes?

Providing an immersive experience.

Flamengo's fans will be able to watch the game on their favorite device, choosing cameras and audio from all around the stadium, choosing the desired stadium seat and controlling the volume between narrator and crowd. With VR support, they'll be able to watch the game in 360 and have a truly emotional experience.

HOW

An option for the game broadcast is to invest in a product like LiveU. For example, the LU600 HEVC portable transmission unit offers a 4K broadcast that supports VR and 360 degrees applications. It also simultaneously saves a high-quality copy of the live for future purposes.
An option for the 360 sound experience for live broadcast is to invest in a product like Insoudz. They're will also offer a streaming video broadcast with VR support soon. It's called Insoudz Zoom.

OPPORTUNITY

Habits are changing.
In 2019, total internet consumption exceeded TV consumption for the first time.

THINKING The available options are too expensive. I just want to pay for watching only Flamengo's games, not other teams. I get annoyed every time that I can't find any TV show speaking about the game. I want to check and simulate championship standings. I want to take pictures and videos of the game. This game isn't over for me. I just want to keep having fun if Flamengo wins, or complain and understand the reason if Flamengo loses.
OPPORTUNITIES To offer pricing options for every kind of user income: Cheap – 3 games / month. Medium – 5 games. High – All games. To offer videos about previous games and soccer players training. To inform the importance of this championship round. Insert a chat for fans, to start a conversation before the game. Insert championship standings, simulate results, game statistics etc. The user will be able to take pictures or videos of the game and share on social networks. Post-game show with game analysis, interviews, and chat interaction. Offer some memes for sharing in social networks.

STORYBOARD

1. Raul is used to go to Flamengo’s games often, to feel the unique emotion of cheering with the biggest soccer team crowd in Brazil.

2. There are a few games left to the end of the championship and Raul was planning to buy game tickets, until he realized that the tickets are sold out, and he discovered this is happening a lot.

3. He looked for alternatives, like pay per view services, but he always says that “nothing is compared” to feel the emotion of being at the stadium.

4. He found out about Xports and gave it a try. He signed up in Xports website and bought a VR glass.

5. He just said “I can’t explain. It’s like being inside the stadium from my couch. It just took me to Maracanã, unbelievable!”

6. Nowadays, Raul and thousand of Flamengo’s fans that lives far away from the stadium are watching games in Xports.

Navigation

The main state of the application will be a full screen, with nothing besides game screen, score and time. Since user move the mouse, tap or hit the smart tv controls, the main menu, camera and volume control will show up.

Final Words

Being part of the largest hackathon in Latin America, with more than 1,000 participants, was an even more incredible experience, since my challenge was to develop a product for Flamengo, the biggest soccer team in Brazil, which has one of the biggest fans in the world.

As the only designer who worked with 4 developers on the team, I was also responsible for organizing the research and ideation processes (design thinking) and creating the backlog. In the end, the product was ready and was very well rated. At each moment of a hackathon, you wonder how an MVP will be ready so quickly and it will end up happening. It's a very rewarding experience.
